BOMB DESIGN, BUILD, AND DEFEAT CHALLENGE

This course provides the fundamental principles of bomb fusing and firing systems, bomb structure, and construction.

Public Safety and EOD Technicians will learn the fundamental principles of bomb fuzing and firing systems, and bomb structure.  More than a dozen switching mechanisms and booby-trapped circuits will be incorporated. Students receive electronics training in addition to bomb construction; they will learn the basics of electricity, circuit interpretation, prototyping, and soldering. They will have hands-on experience building circuits composed of mechanical switches, electromechanical switches, discrete semi- conductors, and commercial off-the-shelf electronics. All the circuits in this traditional electronics training portion will be used to design at least a dozen functional IED training devices. An entire day will be devoted to defeat. The customer has a choice of a day of x-ray diagnostics, or defeating these devices in a manual techniques or dynamic disrupter exercise. The defeat portion will begin with lectures on defeat logic, tool selection, and engineering theory of the tools and techniques.  Each student will have the opportunity to be the lead operator.  The course is a confidence builder for technician proficiency in manual techniques or dynamic disablement and operators will gain experience defeating the hazardous devices in the team-on-team challenge.
